Office Hours: 8:00AM-12:00 NOON/1:00PM-5:00 PM Monday-Friday
Dyer County was created in October, 1823, following consummation of a treaty made with Chickasaw Indians by Andrew Jackson and Governor Isaac Shelby of Kentucky during 1818. After the treaty was signed and the Chickasaw Indians ceded this territory, immigration began from Virginia and North and South Carolina with the county settling rapidly from 1818 to 1823.
Located in Northwest Tennessee on major highways, Dyersburg and Dyer County are at the gateway of Middle America. Dyer County is a regional center for retail, medical, employment and cultural activities for more than 300,000 people who live in 10 counties in a tri-state area that includes Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas.
The county encompasses 337,280 acres of which 212,504 acres are in crops, pasture and commercial vegetables. Agriculture in Dyer County is diverse with crops such as corn, cotton, grain sorghum, soybeans, and wheat and is one of the largest industries generating an approximate annual value of $72.1 million dollars in revenue. Beef cattle are the predominant livestock with some swine, horses, dairy cattle, sheep and goats also found here. The average farm size is 398 acres with acreage ranging from 10 to 8,000. Currently the agricultural community has 5,162 acres of irrigated land. The average age of the farmer population is 56.5 years of age.
The Dyer County Agricultural Extension Service has been in Dyersburg since 1912, two years before the United States Department of Agriculture became a partner and authorized Extension Services nationwide. Our mission is the same today as almost 90 years ago - to release research generated information to the public in order to improve the quality of life for local citizens. Occupations, lifestyles, and technology have changed, but the need for information has not. If anything, that need is greater today than ever. The Dyer County Agricultural Extension Service is a unique partnership between Dyer County Government, The University of Tennessee, Tennessee State University and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Extension programs are available in commercial adult agriculture, family and consumer sciences, 4-H youth programs, and community resource development...
